First Baptist Church - DSC-0139 - (Church Histories) Historic Churches & Temples
First Baptist Church in Calgary, Alberta originally opened its doors in 1888 with a much less awesome building then we see here. This present sanctuary was dedicated on May 12, 1912. Designed by D.S. McIlroy, the church construction began in 1911, at a cost of $152,000 for the church and rectory. It could originally seat 1,360 parishioners. The six lots the church sits on were purchased from the future prime minister of Canada, R.B. Bennett for the sum of $25,000. This present church building, replaced the old Baptist church structure, which was destroyed by fire in 1905, which proved to be too small for the growing congregation. The present structure is adorned by amber-toned stained glass windows imported from Germany as part of the original construction of this sanctuary in 1912. A three-manual, 42-stop pipe organ was built and installed in 1912 by the Casavant Company from Quebec, famous organ builders around the world. The organ has been upgraded several times since. Today’s 900-seat acoustically rich heritage sanctuary supports many different choirs. The old brick and sandstone church is not only currently serving as a house of worship, but also as a historic landmark and community beacon.
