E-170 King Geo VI - 12 may 1937

This was King George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II. This was his maiden speech May 12, 1937. His brother Edward VIII had just resigned from the Throne in December of 1936 and he was thrust into the job. The King had a major speech impediment. He stuttered badly. This was one reason he had to speak slowly and think about each word he was about to say. His wife Elizabeth, later Queen Mum, gave him much support and encouragement. The King ruled for 17 years. He was a good man, much loved by all the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
