E-199 Albert Duke and Eliz Duchess of York

Prince Albert and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, as husband and wife, with the title of Duke and Duchess of York. Then in 1936, life changed for this couple and their two children. He becomes King George VI and she becomes Queen Elizabeth Consort later known as the Queen Mum. Why did this happen for them to be King and Queen? Albert's older brother, Edward, Prince of Wales became King in January of 1936 after their father, King George V died. Then King Edward VIII suddenly decided to quit the kingship and he resigned or abdicated in December of that year. So suddenly, Prince Albert, Duke of York, becomes King George VI and his wife becomes Queen Elizabeth. Their oldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth becomes the next in line to inherit the title of queen. What a shock that was to all the royals.
